MOCHE Water Project Ciudad de Dios
Our current project is to drill a well at a spring at the base of the village and construct a stone & concrete reservoir above the village. Lay 200 m of pipe to connect the well & reservoir and 300 m of pipe to connect all 60 households to system. Install a pump to lift the water to the reservoir. Preliminary test show the water is free of contaminants.
Our goal for 2007 is to raise $5,000 to provide safe, dependable drinking water to 300 families at the village of Ciudad de Dios in the middle Moche Valley, north coast of Peru. MOCHE, Inc has raised $2,500. We are half way to our goal. We need $2,500. Ciudad de Dios is a squatter community, 15 mile from Trujillo. Residents work as seasonal agricultural laborers, earning less than $100 per month.
MOCHE partners, the UNC-Chapel Hill chapter of Engineers without Borders, will design the system, test the water, and provide a treatment protocol, if necessary, at not charge. The people of Ciudad de Dios will provide all the labor and will manage the system via an elected water committee. Households will pay 1 sol (35 cents) per month for water. The District of Laredo will provide sand, gravel, stone, and a dump truck. MOCHE, Inc. will purchase all other materials and provide food for hot lunches for the workers.
