MOCHE, Inc is proud to continue our commitment to improve the health status of the communities in the Middle Moche Valley through the construction of a two-phase health clinic in Bello Horizonte. We are happy to announce that in the summer of 2011 we completed the first phase of the health clinic. The mission of the health clinic is to improve access to primary health and dental care for more than 10,000 Peruvians in the Middle Moche Valley and to provide health education for the communities, in particular women. The health clinic will offer free or subsidized fees depending on patient income along with free health education classes.
MOCHE is very excited to be building a dental examination room in the clinic, currently there are no dental services offered in the valley due to its remoteness although there is great need. Families are often unable to afford the trip to Trujillo for dental care and the lack of dental care is painfully apparent. MOCHE, Inc hopes to partner with dental students and dentists from the USA and Peru to assist the Peruvian Ministry in staffing the clinic.
The first phase of the health clinic consists of two rooms which are the examination and waiting room. The space of the waiting room will be used for implementing classes primarily targeted to mothers on pre-natal care, post-natal care, nutrition, and prevention of childhood diseases. The first phase has already been completed and we will embark on the second phase of construction in 2012 and 2013.
The second phase of the health clinic includes a pharmacy room that will offer subsidized medicine provided by the Peruvian Ministry of Health. A dental examination room is also in the plans for the second phase. The second phase of the clinic is slated to be built in the summer of 2012 and 2013 with the support of various partners. MOCHE, Inc is hopeful that by the end of 2012 that a part of the health clinic will be operating with the support of the Peruvian Ministry of Health. A small garden and park for children are also in the plans for the second phase due to the lack of green space and community areas in Bello Horizonte
The construction of the third and final phase of the clinic is planned for 2014. The third phase of the health clinic involves the construction of another examination room and bathrooms for patients. By the end of this phase, health education classes, dental care services, pharmacy services, and primary health care will be offered to more than 10,000 people in the Middle Moche Valley.
MOCHE's Partners in the Construction of the Health Clinic
MOCHE, Inc makes every effort to collaborate multilaterally in order to ensure the success of projects. We partner with various local government officials, community members, Nourish International chapters, Engineers without Borders, churches, community health workers, and with other local non-governmental organizations in our mission to improving the health status of impoverished communities in the Middle Moche Valley.
By partnering with the local government of Laredo, MOCHE was able to secure the donations of building materials for the clinic, such as sand and gravel. MOCHE also has the full support of the Peruvian Ministry of Health which will be staffing the health clinic with a medical doctor, nurse, subsidized medicine, and a pharmacist. We also have the full support of the community of Bello Horizonte which is the site of the clinic and the community has made significant labor for the construction of the clinic. MOCHE has also partnered with Nourish International chapters from Yale University and Ohio State University along with generous financial donations from West End UMC, Nourish International chapters, and individual donors.
