MOCHE Expeditions
Huaraz/Chavin Trek
Itinerary 2007
July 31st – August 8th

MOCHE is a nonprofit organization.
Fees for tours and treks are tax deductable and all proceeds go directly toward community-defined development projects and heritage protection efforts in Peru.

Day 1, Tuesday, July 31st: Huanchaco
The trekking party will assemble in Huanchaco, a small fishing village on the north coast of Peru, just outside of Trujillo. We will have a group dinner on Tuesday evening to get acquainted with one another and discuss the expedition ahead. We will stay the night at the Hostal Huankarute in Huanchaco.

Day 2, Wednesday, August 1st: Huanchaco-Huaraz
After breakfast, the group will board a bus in Trujillo in route to Huaraz, approximately 8 hours. We will have lunch in on the road. Arriving at Huaraz, we then travel by combi, a.k.a. peruvian mini-van, 45 minutes to the WayInn Lodge at 3712 meters, 12,175 feet. It is just above the city of Huaraz, elevation 3080 meters, 10,100 feet. Dinner will be waiting for us upon arrival.

Day 3, Thursday, August 2nd: Huaraz
The group will have breakfast at the California Café in Huaraz. After breakfast there are no scheduled activities. This will be a “free day” for sight seeing, shopping, hiking, or individuals may wish to just relax at the lodge and enjoy the sauna. Transportation, activities, lunch and dinner are on an individual basis; these costs are not covered by participant fees.

Day 4, Friday, August 3rd: Day hike to Wilcahuain
At dawn we will eat breakfast together at the lodge and then hike up to the Wari ruins of Wilcahuain [1100 AD], approximately 8 kilometers, 3.5 miles, from the lodge. We will gain more than 1,000 meters, or 3,280 feet, in altitude on a moderately steep incline. Important note: this is a required, preliminary hike for acclimatization. A talk on the archaeology of the region will be given at the site, followed by a tour of the site. A packed lunch will be provided. That night the group will meet for dinner to discuss the trek to Chavín.
